Quern is an Edinburgh area, amateur music group whose members, in addition to playing and singing for concerts and dances, dance at the demonstration level. Quern has performed in France, Holland, Germany and Australia and has accepted an invitation to perform in Spain. At full strength for their concerts and shows, Quern has twelve on stage, fewer attending for dancing. Dances covered include Scottish country set dances, ceilidh dances and other ballroom dances. Instruments played include fiddles, 'cello, flute, mandolin, accordions, concertina, guitar & rhythm.
Quern have a range of recordings which stretch from shows such as 'Life of Robert Burns' and 'Royal Mile' to 'Quern in Concert' and songs written by Quern member Wallace Lockhart.
Quern was formed in 1984 specifically to raise money for charities, but with the clear intention of promoting the best of Scottish culture in entertaining ways. Many press reports and their appearances at major events such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe vouch for their success.
